Renovation No. 8 is focused on the new stairs and finishing the ceiling and walls in the stairwell. With the busiest season over its time that we get focused on completing some renovations.
To start the stairs Jerry needed to drywall the ceiling at the walls upstairs first as the floor will be removed to allow for the stairs. once we cut a hole the ceilings will be much too tall to easily dry walled. once Jerry finished dry walling this area the third largest renovation could take place.
Jerry cut the hole for the new stairs and created a new landing. The previous owners had this area of the floor supported poorly Jerry had to remove all the existing floor and rebuild the landing which made for extra work.
Once the landing was put in Jerry and I got started on the new stairs, wahoo (which means bye bye with the old and in with more living room square footage and open concept kitchen.). Jerry and I drywalled first before adding the stringers this way the drywall continues into the storage area under the stairs. the pre-cut and measured stringers where then installed. the winder boxes where built in place once we got the main two runs fixed in place.
Iām excited to put the final touches on the stairs although that will be a while from now. we will be painting the treads black and adding shiplap in a chevron pattern to the risers and the railing will be black cast iron.
the railing will be placed on a wall which will be built later on so that we can move the existing clawfoot tub from downstairs to the upstairs. we want to wait so that we damage as little as possible when bringing the tub up. when we are able to build the wall to block in the stairs Jerry and I will be adding hidden doors to the storage underneath.
Now that the new stairs are put in we can tear down the old stairs. tearing the old stairs down will allow for 24 extra square feet in the living room and will allow for a beautiful view from the kitchen to the living room, yesssss. we also were able to place a temporary floor over the hole (which will eventually be a hatch door) to the basement, which is just in time. out little nugget will soon bee motoring around the house.
